These are my thoughts on what are currently the hottest cards and products available.
6/28/99
Okay, I guess I'll finally write something for this column. Hopefully I can stay unbusy enough to update it on a regular basis. First, I think I'll start with the most collectible players at the moment. Well, what can I say...I live in Texas. This is a great time to live in Texas. Last week, in case you didn't know, the Dallas Stars won the Stanley Cup and the San Antonio Spurs won the NBA Championship. So around here it's David Robinson, Tim Duncan, and all Stars players. Of course your Basketball rookies are also making a comeback considering the lockout and all. Keep an eye on ROY Vince Carter, Jason Williams and Paul Pierce. Football rookies are also hitting the shelves in the new products. Tim Couch, Rickey Williams, Donavan McNabb, and others are selling good right now. In Baseball, the Home Run Race is on again. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa are hot again and this year they are joined by Jose Canseco. Let's also not forget Ken Griffey, Jr. who always seems to be on a hot streak. As far as Baseball Rookies go, look for Pat Burrell to heat up and J.D. Drew cools off.
I haven't seen all the new products that are out right now, but the ones I have seen are awesome. All 1999 Football products are doing well right now because of the popularity of the new rookie class. Donruss Elite seems to be the best set so far. Look for the always popular Topps Chrome Basketball which is filled with hot rookies as always. You can probably find it at your local hobby store but if you are really lucky, you can find it at a retail store for $2.99 a pack. One hot product you won't be able to find at retail is 1998-99 Upper Deck SP Authentic Basketball. Not only is it filled with great inserts and memorabilia, it also has the most valuable rookie cards this year. My favorite product out right now is in Baseball. Check out the Hobby Exclusive Upper Deck Century. It contains tons of autographs and game-used cards from current players and retired greats. You should definitely buy a pack or two, especially if you like vintage memorabilia. That's all I have on my mind right now. Let me know your thoughts.
